All the pundits will throw out the 'conservative' mantra; and the evangelical card as the reason why Mitt Romney lost the South Carolina republican presidential primary race to Newt Gingrich. However, the real reason is that Newt Gingrich, being a child of the deep south (from Georgia), knew very well how to excite the right-wing voters which make-up the republican base. Race! That's play the race card - and you get rewarded by those who believe that everything wrong with their personal lives and the country is the fault of blacks and other minorities.
When Newt Gingrich began using racially charged assertions like President Obama wants to be "food stamp" president - while he - Gingrich wants to be the paycheck president - he knew that's exactly the kind of hyperbolic contrast that the one-third of the American electorate wants to hear - and he fed it to them; and they rewarded him mightily for it (see video below). Mitt Romney, on the other hand, tried to challenge the President on failed economic policies; reasonable - but he failed to 'race-bait' and, although admirable, it does not get rewarded when you must appeal to Republican Party Bigots in a state like South Carolina!
